General notes: why steel

Why build with steel framing

Engineered, factory-built and made to last. Here's what steel framing gives your project.

  1. 01

    Engineered for your building

Every truss, wall panel and floor system is designed by the manufacturer's engineers for your plans and the loads at your site. Stamped drawings are available on request, depending on project and state.

  2. 02

    Riveted connections

Panels and trusses are joined at the factory with structural rivets, set by machine to the engineered design, the same kind of fastening that holds aircraft together. A rivet makes a permanent joint that can't back out the way a screw can.

  3. 03

Built in a factory, stood up fast

Walls and trusses are roll-formed and assembled by computer-controlled machines from the engineering model, then arrive labeled to your plans. Your crew stands and connects them instead of measuring and cutting every piece on site, so the frame goes up in days.

  4. 04

    Straight and true

Steel doesn't shrink, swell or warp with moisture the way lumber does, so walls stay plumb, floors stay flat and drywall has fewer nail pops and cracks.

  5. 05

No rot, mold food or termites

Steel is inorganic. Decay fungi and termites have nothing to eat, which matters in the humid Southeast where subterranean termites are common.

  6. 06

    Won't burn

Cold-formed steel is a noncombustible material, so the frame itself adds no fuel to a fire. Fire ratings for walls and floors come from the tested assembly your designer specifies.

  7. 07

    Ready for wiring and plumbing

Studs come with punched openings for electrical and plumbing runs, and open-web floor trusses leave room for ducts, so trades spend less time drilling and notching.

  8. 08

    Recyclable

Steel framing is made with recycled content, and offcuts and old framing can be recycled again instead of going to a landfill.

Full framing packages and kits

Walls, floors and roof engineered together by one manufacturer, so the loads line up from the roof to the foundation. Kits cover a defined building, such as a shop or barndominium shell, delivered with a layout.

Takeoff: steel vs. wood

Compare steel and wood

Compare the whole cost of framing, not just the lumber or steel: materials, labor and the days the frame takes to go up, priced at your own cost per day.

Loan interest, rentals, supervision and other trades waiting while the frame goes up.

Full frame, one story, 9 ft walls, 6/12 roof. Change any of these in the full calculator.

Questions

Common questions

Do you manufacture or install steel framing?

No. Carolina Steel Buildings reviews your plans or project details and matches you with one of our manufacturing partners. The manufacturer prices, engineers and delivers the framing. Your crew, or an installer you hire, puts it up.

What should I send for a quote?

Plans are best, as PDF or DWG. If you do not have plans yet, send the footprint, wall heights, roof pitch, project location, which parts you need (roof, floors, walls or the full frame) and your timeline.

Who does the engineering?

Engineering is provided by the manufacturer for your specific project. Stamped drawings are available on request, depending on project and state.

Is steel framing cheaper than wood?

Usually not up front. Steel framing generally costs more than wood at the material stage. People choose it for other reasons, such as straight, consistent members and resistance to rot and termites. Our calculator shows a planning range. Real pricing comes from the manufacturer.

Will steel framing be approved where I am building?

Requirements vary by state, county and city. Confirm code, load and permit requirements with your local building department and the engineer of record for your project.

What does a quote request cost me?

Nothing. Carolina Steel Buildings may receive a fee from manufacturers when a quote becomes an order.
