General notes

What to think about in North Carolina

01Coast and sounds
Coastal counties see hurricanes and salt air. Wind design near the coast is usually more demanding, and steel near salt water may call for a heavier galvanized coating. Ask the manufacturer what coating they specify for your site.
02Mountains
Western counties can see heavier snow, steep lots and higher elevations. Roof trusses there are designed for the snow and wind at your elevation, which the engineer sets from your address.
03Piedmont
The Piedmont is warm and humid with clay soils. Moisture and termites are long-term concerns for wood framing here, and they are part of why some owners look at steel.
04Permits
Permits and inspections are handled by your city or county building department. Requirements for stamped drawings vary, so ask your inspector early.
Confirm locally

Confirm code, load and permit requirements with your local building department and the engineer of record. We do not state design wind speeds, snow loads or code sections for any site.

North Carolina questions

Can you quote a project on the Outer Banks or another coastal area?

Yes, send the plans and the address. The manufacturer engineers the frame for the wind and exposure at that site. Confirm local requirements with your building department and the engineer of record.

Does the mountain location change the roof trusses?

It can. Snow and wind loads depend on elevation and location, and the manufacturer designs the trusses for your address.

Who reviews the engineering?

The manufacturer provides the engineering. Your local building department reviews what it requires for the permit. Stamped drawings are available on request, depending on project and state.
